Showcasing a diverse portfolio of creative projects, including short films and documentaries, designed to challenge conventions and inspire critical thinking.
I am a media sociologist and filmmaker with extensive experience in both academia and the film industry. My career spans a range of creative and scholarly pursuits, from film directing and producing documentaries to contributing to film festivals . As a member of the selection committee for the COVIDeo-19 Film Festival in 2021, I evaluated films that explored the impact of the pandemic on higher education students. Additionally, I have experience in the marketing teams of prominent film festivals such as the Fajr Film Festival and Tehran Short Film Festival 2014-2017. Earlier in my career, I worked as the local producer for six short films directed by Abbas Kiarostami’s best international students in Tehran, produced for the Fajr International Film Festival in 2015. My experience also includes film editing using Adobe Premiere for various studios, working with national TV in Iran between 2011 and 2014.
Eating Leftovers (2025)
Currently in production, Eating Leftovers is a sociological documentary exploring the Ramadan night markets in Lakemba, Sydney. Blending visual ethnography and reflexive filmmaking, the project investigates how religion, commerce, and cultural identity are negotiated in public space. Through candid street footage, everyday conversations, and a close reading of aesthetic performances, the film interrogates the politics of visibility and the commodification of Muslimness under neoliberal multiculturalism.
Story of a Land (2025)
Research, fieldwork, and pre-production for my next sociological documentary are underway! This project focuses on climate change and the efforts of the legendary Peter Andrews OAM, creator of the “Natural Sequence Farming” method. Peter has transformed degraded landscapes into thriving ecosystems and earned global recognition for his innovative work, including receiving the Order of Australia Medal in 2011.
Arrhythmia (2018)
In 2018, I directed Arrhythmia, a documentary exploring mental health and the uncertainties of daily life in Iran. This documentary has been screened at international film festivals such as the Interdoc Film Festival, Festival Cinemistica, and Festival Mental – Mental Health Arts and Film Festival. It was also featured on ARTE TV and presented at the International Visual Sociology Association (IVSA) conference in 2019.
PIRI (2017)
As a visual sociologist, I had the privilege of contributing to the book Piri: Exploring the Everyday Lives of the Elderly by capturing photographs that complement its narratives. These images aim to visually document the experiences and emotions of aging, adding another layer to the rich ethnographic insights presented in the text.
We Just Like to Eat (2016)
We Just Like to Eat is an experimental short film that juxtaposes the visceral act of slaughtering a chicken with the intimate sounds of a family enjoying their meal. By intertwining these contrasting moments, the film explores themes of consumption, detachment, and the often-overlooked realities of food production.
